Heroes Con Pre Commissions & Zatanna

31 Days of Halloween- Headless Horseman

It's the first of October and that can mean only one thing. Halloween is only 30 more days away! If many of you didn't know it's my favoritest holiday. Love it so much that it's my wedding anniversary! Definitely love the Autumn. Nice crisp clean air, cooler days, and the crunch of the fallen leaves. Not to mention all the pumpkin-y flavored things that come out at the time of year.

This year I have decided to do a month long sketch-a-day of things that inspire the Halloween spirit. Things that you can look at and fall right into that mood.

The Headless Horseman was suggested to me by my wife Lisa. She and I were on the same path with wanting to start this off with a Jack-O-Lantern, but she kicked it into overdrive when she mentioned the Horseman.

Heroes Con wrap up.

Heroes Con was amazing. To this day our best con yet. Tons of old friends, some we've never met, some we had. Lots of fans from the social media outlets stopping by and saying hi. We had a short convention as we had to be back in MI early Monday morning. We have an affinity for North Carolina so there was no resistance getting us back there.

Some of the highlights of the convention.  -

Friends. Meeting up with tons of people new and old! Those people are (in no particular order) Richard , Axebone , Little John, Craig, Sandra, Eugene, Skottie, Lan , Brad, Kris, Petersen, And some other cool cats that I didn't happen to catch their names that would just hover over our table.So many people were there and we didn't get to hang out with too many, we will have to rectify this for next years show. Maybe come in a day early and leave a day late.

The Official Drink and Draw  - Dan Panosian, and Dave Johnson bring their Drink and Draw flare to Heroes Con to help support a charity called Team Cul-de-sac. They had chip board and coasters for artists to draw on which then get bid on by members of the crowd. I did a Gwen Stacy, a Batman and Psylocke. I wish I snapped some photos of them. The Heroes Art Auction. This took place in the Westin Hotel's ballroom next to the convention center. We got to view the pieces before they were bid on, and it was awesome. So many beautiful pieces. It was fun to pick out the pieces you liked and try to guess what the winning bid would be before the call begins. Excitement fills the room when a bidding war happens, and it gets even better when people refuse to put down their paddle. Going into the auction having a piece donated of my own art, I told my wife Lisa that "I hope it goes for at least $100. Watching the crowd for reactions as the piece makes the rounds to potential buyers. Everyone looks like they have positive things to say, and I'm playing it cool. The piece makes its way to the table and I'm jonesing to see what it'll go for. The piece is announced as a modern take of Mystery Incorporated and the bidding begins. It was a proud humble moment to see these people actively wanting to fight for the piece. It also did better than I thought it was going to the final bid on the piece was $375.


All in all the convention was great. The people, the food, the experience. We are definitely making this a must show every year.

Wednesday's ArtCast art.

This is the art from this past Wednesday's show over at Ustream. These are going to be a weekly card art show where on Wednesdays you'll be able to pre-order the art before the show starts at 8pm EST.

The art on these cards from top to bottom, left to right are - Elektra, Psylocke, Batwoman, Tardis(human form), Pepper Potts (Rescue), Gorilla, Monkey, Hippo, Fozzie Bear, and artist Skottie Young.

Each card is restricted to a head/bust shot, and inked and colored. Archival inks, and Watercolors are used to create these art pieces. Each card/slot is $20 + $2 shipping, and is available to purchase at my store on Wednesdays.

TMNT - Raphael

Gimme a Break, I'm Cool but Crude.

Did this Raph piece at the suggestion of David Petersen. I don't do a lot of TMNT art, so this was a great shift. I let my memory take me to the turtles instead of trying to ref it. I always feel like that will bring out your real style. So draw with your brains!

New watercolor/acrylic/acetate piece. This one was a lot of fun as I just let the story play out as I was painting it. Available at my store for $200.00

I think I'm in need of a better camera to take pictures of my art for sale that doesn't scan that great. Any suggestions out there for something economical?

The three stages of Cerebus the Aardvark.

This piece was VERY fun to do. I've never been so into these water colors. It was a very lengthy process. The inks are some of my favorite. That style of inking while it takes quite a bit to complete, it's very relaxing. Tedious, but relaxing. I also think the end result just shows how much work goes into it!

I have here three different versions of this piece. You'll see the water color piece here at the left. Then below you'll find the black and white line art, as well as a digitally colored piece. I'll have to say personally my traditional colors blow my digital stuff out of the water. Looks like I'll have to learn from my traditional work and incorporate that back into the digital work. I took what I learned digitally and applied that to my traditional works... but it looks like I need to revisit my digital work theories.

If anyone is wondering if I'm taking commissions for pieces like this. I am indeed. It'll be a bit before I can get to yours as I have some other work in between. Star Wars Sketch 08 - Han Solo

Went a different route on Han Solo here. Pencils and watercolors. I think this technique is quite stylish. I will have to play more with this and develop it. I want to tailor it to the lines more. I always saw Han as the cowboy of the group so I added the high noonish back drop to his image.

Star Wars Sketch 03 - Darth Maul

Darth Maul is one of my favorites to draw. I love his tribal tattoo look. I have a horrible love for the color combination of Red, and Black. Something about it is very appealing to me. I tied to do something different with the inks and watercolors on this one. I'll be playing around with this idea in the next ones to come.

Star Wars Sketch 01 - Darth Nihilus

Starting off a little late in 2012. But no matter it'll still be a great year.

The first illustration from Star Wars is from the extended universe. Someone suggested I take a look at the character and this is what came of it. I never knew this character. I am assuming from the ref that this character was created for the Old Republic game. Not knowing a lot about a character and trying to get their likeness down is pretty rough. I think I took this character for a spin with my own style. What do you guys think?

25 Days of DC - Mr. Freeze

I know that I said I'd go hero/villain/hero/villain and so forth, but I just had to end off this project on a Christmas-y note. I thought the best way to end it off would be with a Mr. Freeze and wearing some Santa garb. Something about seeing the hat through the dome was funny to me so I wanted to include that.

25 Days of DC - the Joker

Coming in at #24 of 25 we have the Joker. I was intending the Joker to be the last of the series because he is absolutely my favorite to draw from the DCU. Halfway through this project it hit me. The better idea. I'll be posting that tomorrow. Come by... or buy *laugh* and see the conclusion of the project and I hope you all are having a GREAT Christmas! Here is #22 of 25. Have to say that this one was a blast to do. Don't know too much about this characters history, but his design is pretty fun. Anyone want to fill me in more about his character and where I should read, I mean to say any good trades or anything from this character?

25 Days of DC - the Penguin

Wanted to just go for a more watercolor look on this piece. I'm really feeling like this experiment made me embrace the medium! Gotta get more illustration work with watercolors!

With the Penguin I wanted to do his squinty eyed monocle faced, cigarette holder self. In my head this character will always look like this. Danny Devito (While fun in it's own disquise) was not really the penguin for me. Sorry Timmy!

25 Days of DC - Alfred Pennyworth

As soon as I decided that I wanted to do 25 DC characters for this month, I told myself that I NEEDED to draw Alfred Pennyworth. I don't see to many people draw Alfred and give him the fan art treatment. I may have to do more later on with him, but he is (like yesterdays post.) a breath of fresh air in a world full of meta-humans and aliens.

Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome.

11x17 watercolors on semi-smooth bristol.

Just got finished with this new painting. Man I'm really feeling the watercolors. As much as it matters on the quality of paints, the paper makes the most of them. So get some good paper to paint on with your tools of choice.

This features the characters Brobee, Plex, Mudo, and DJ Lance Rock from the popular kids program Yo Gabba Gabba! on Nickelodeon.

25 Days of DC - Detective Chimp

So I wasn't going to do this, but I opted out of one of my picks for a character for one someone requested. This is Detective Chimp. Now I had a super hero in mind and this just screamed fun. It is nice to take a break from the hero/villain types for a bit and do something little more off the beaten path.

As always 9x12 bristol board in water color and pencil.
